Merseyrail, litter and the ‘environment’

What I saw this evening has so annoyed me that I’m taking time out of my normal Friday evening beer-drinking experiments to write this …

I was standing outside the main entrance to Moorfields, under the escalator finishing a smoke before I went in to catch my train (at about 5:10 this evening), when the door to the office or whatever it is opened – the one with the dirty great “No Smoking” sign on it.

Anyway, the door opened, and a flurry of rubbish shot out of the door, hotly puersued by a broom-head! A chap wearing a Merseyrail coat then stepped out, and I thought “aha, he’s going to pick it up in a dustpan and put it in the bin”. Did he hell as like.

Platform 2 – James Street Station, Liverpool

James Street, Platform 2?

James Street, Platform 2?

… and before I have Merseyrail’s legal team on the blower, this is obviously a joke. This platform is far too clean to be James Street No.2.

Merseyrail profits

Merseyrail have announced record pre-tax profits for last year, of £9m. (source) & (source)

The figure that caught my eye was that they invested a whopping £800,000 of that in improvements over the period. That’s a lot of yellow and black paint!

But then, I thought, I wonder how many passengers use the network, and how much does that turn out to be (roughly speaking) per passenger, over the year?

First of all we need to work out how many trips (approximately) are made over the network on a yearly basis … (source – Merseyside Route Utilisation Strategy, March 2009 – PDF 3MB )

(I’m only including ‘local’ traffic here, the actual passenger figures are higher)

Wirral Line Annual trips to and from central Liverpool (million)
New Brighton – Liverpool
0.8
West Kirby – Liverpool
2.5
Chester – Liverpool
2.8
Ellesmere Port – Liverpool
0.1
Total
6.2 million trips

Merseyrail staff – helpful?

Merseyrail are currently running a poster promotion that proudly announces to us that we apparently like their staff – although the very same statistics also suggest that a third of us don’t, but never mind.

Well, the guy at Manor Road this morning deserves a special mention. I’ll just call him Mr Blobby, to protect his identity. I missed my train this morning, thanks to your abundance of helpfulness mate. Thanks.

While I admit I was cutting it fine, (more…)

Lost in the maze

I’m not entirely au fait with the layout of James Street station, I only use it if I’ve been out for an after-work tipple or two, by which time it’s usually pretty quiet. But I think I might get to know it a bit better over the coming weeks.

It’s like a warren in there!

Mind you, the confusion (not just for little old me) was considerably added to by the almost total lack of any information (more…)
